Kargil Vijay Diwas marks the day in 1999 when Indian soldiers reclaimed the icy heights of Kargil. Many of them were barely older than the students sitting in our classrooms today.
That is the detail worth holding onto. The distance between a young student and a soldier on a ridge is smaller than it looks — both are being asked to become more than they were, and both depend on people behind the scenes making sure nothing they need arrives late.
We honour the fallen best by building a country worthy of their sacrifice, and that country is built, in no small part, in classrooms. Teaching the next generation well is its own kind of national service.
