On a campus, the friendships that end up mattering most rarely start as an event. A hostel allotment puts two strangers in the same room. An attendance sheet seats a lab partner next to you for a semester. A mentorship list pairs a first-year with a senior who is really just there to help with placements. None of it begins as friendship. It begins as a room number, a batch code, a mentor-mentee list, the unglamorous logistics an institution runs every day. A good system does not manufacture the relationship. It creates more of the small, repeated contact that lets one form.
This week, on whichever Sunday you mark it, the friend who got a student through a brutal semester almost certainly started as an assignment nobody thought twice about. The job of a campus system is to keep making room for that, quietly, in the background, where the best of these things happen anyway.
